June 7th, Friday
Put the furnace on again this morning. Still not summer. The road from the park to the main highway was quite broken up from frost heaves and gravel trucks. We thought we had bad roads !. We stopped in Battlefort, SK at Fort Battlefort for a tour. It was built in 1876 to create a police force, The North West Mounted Police, negotiate and sign treaties with the First Nations and help build a railroad to the West coast. The NWMP and the soldiers were involved in the conflicts of 1885. Bernie has had enough of museums and forts for a while ! Along the road to Edmonton we noticed the grain bins were being replaced by oil containers in the fields. Ugly black cylinder style
In Lloydminister the little green border sign for SK and AB was hanging on a light pole at an intersection. The border goes right thru the middle of the town. It rained on and off all day but still warm at 18 degrees. Found a campground on the edge of the city and we were lucky enough to get the last spot. On our way to the West Edmonton Mall we hit our first traffic jam after 6000kms. What a huge Mall - had to buy a new pair of sandals as I left mine at Grammie Jeanne's in NB., walked the mall from one end to the other, dinner out and then back to watch Boston defeat Pittsburg in 4 games.
