June 13, Thursday
It's sunny !!! And we had company for breakfast - 4 elk came wandering around the RV. On the way to Lake Louise we made a couple of stops, the first at the Athabasca Falls which were awesome. So much water flowing thru a small space and such a beautiful colour of green (the colour of glacier water). We walked down thru a previous channel that the water had flowed thru hundreds of years ago. As we drove south there were more and more motorhomes on the road, the view of the Rockies changed with every turn in the road, fast flowing creeks and waterfalls off the mountains everywhere, big horned sheep, and we climbed very steep roads (maxed out at 2076 meters). The next stop was at the Athabasca Glacier where we climbed aboard a Brewster big wheeled ice bus and toured the glacier which is one of six glaciers off of the Columbia Ice Fields. We had an Aussie tour guide (they are everywhere out west) who fed us a lot of glacier info and glacier water - supposedly from the fountain of youth ha, ha. . On to Lake Louise - the only time we had been here before it was winter and we skated on the Lake. Today the sun was shining, it was warm and the lake was that special colour of green. We sat on a bench and enjoyed the day and thought of how Derek and Katja enjoyed this spot. A little drive by of the Post Hotel, coffee from the Deli and a bit of shopping rounded out the visit to Lake Louise. Then we crossed into BC and thru the Kicking Horse Pass. At the Spiral Tunnels which were built to move the trains up the Pass and the Continential Divide we were lucky enough to see a engine emerge from the tunnel while the rest of it is entering the tunnel above it. All along the road there are signs to watch for avalanches during the winter and falling rocks all the time. The last stop before we pull into Golden, BC for the night is The Natural Bridge waterfalls where the water used to flow over the rocks - as years went on it worked its way underneath and formed a bridge. Quite fascinating. We stopped at the Golden Taps in Golden to have a cool one and to try and track down Adam McCullough who owns the Taps. No luck but later he showed up at the RV for a visit - enjoyed it so much
