June 11th, Tuesday

Rained all night. Cool this morning,9 degrees, overcast and raining on and off. Bernie and I left this morning with Uncle Neil for a short trip up the Alaskan Highway (Dawson Creek is mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway) towards Fort St. John. Took a bit of a detour and went across an original curved, wooden bridge oh the AH. Just before Fort St. John there is a huge hill to come down before crossing the Peace River. The tractor trailers were creeping down the mountain. After Fort St John we turned off the AH and headed towards Moberly Lake where Neil has a cabin. It was a beautiful drive along the Peace River - valleys, hills, agricultural land, cattle. We stopped at the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on the Peace River and had a guided underground tour of the Dam. This Dam and the one at Peace Canyon provide 33% of BC's power. Very interesting - 2 km long dam, 7 years to build, one of the highest in the world, and is a earth filled dam. Along the Dinosaur Lake Reservoir dozens of Bald Eagles dived for the fish that had gone through the dam. They were only feet away from our vehicle. Spent some time at Neil's camp on the Lake and what a great spot. Log cabin, boat house, decks, hot tub (I think everybody out west has a hot tub), the toys, bunkhouses, etc. Our last stop was in Chetwyand to view a few of the 120 chain saw sculptures in the town. Amazing. Have had a super visit in DC.
