June 14th, Friday

Really looking forward to having breakfast with Adam and his two boys Tristan and Wilson before they went to school but we messed up on our time. Apparently the time does not change at the border of BC and AB but at the other side of the Rogers pass in BC so we were an hour late for our breakfast date. We did meet the boys but only for a minute. So mad at ourselves ! We headed out towards Kelowna and thru the Rogers Pass we travelled thru at least 6 sheds which protect the highway from avalanches.
Then the rain started, the clouds covered the mountains and it was only 9 degrees. a lot of avalanche signs and rock falling signs along the road. We are hugging the mountains and surrounded by trees and do not have the view we did yesterday. There were a few spots I was glad we were on the inside of the road ! We stopped at the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre which had an interesting video on avalanche control in the Rockies.
At Craigellachie the last spike of the CPR track was driven in 1885. Still raining. At Sicamous we turned towards Kelowna and are now out of the Rockies and into the foothills, farmland, lakes and a pretty drive along Mara Lake. It is a windy road right on the edge of the Lake and there are hundreds of house boats on the lake and parked at marinas and cottages. We stopped at the Log Barn for some homemade Mennonite treats (ie: cheese, pecan pie, sausage, etc) and watched the goats haul up treats on a bucket elevator system.
We toured Vernon, BC and enjoyed all the murals they have painted on their buildings. A busy town. Then thru Kelowna and onto West Kelowna to Bernie's cousin Pat's abode on the lake. He and his daughter Zoe entertained us for the night with a boat ride, Zoe surfing behind the boat and a delicious salmon dinner.
