July 3rd, Wednesday
Great little campground right by the river - no car traffic noise but there were trains ! The track was just on the other side of the river and the first train went thru just when we were half asleep. What an eye opener :-) . Just down the road we stopped at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre where in 1903 , 30 million cubic meters of limestone crashed from the summit of Turtle Mountain onto the town of Frank. It was Canada's deadliest landslide. It is amazing to see the rock that came down and the Centre does an excellent job of presentation. Well worth the stop. The little town of Fort MacLeod has the Fort which is the Museum of the Northwest Mounted Police - some interesting artifacts. Last tourist stop today was the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (a World Heritage Site) with a significance of being an ancient communal hunting ground that was used by the Plains people for nearly 6000 years. Another interesting stop ! As we continue on towards Calgary we have left the Rockies behind and are back in rolling hills, plains, crops and cattle. And hundreds of windmills are on the horizon. We drove by High River and you can still see streets flooded. Was a heart breaking sight. We made our way thru one road construction zone after another and our poor GPS finally led us to our campground just outside of Calgary. Bernie's cousin Diane and her husband Ron picked us up and treated us to a homemade meal at their home in Calgary. A great evening. We met their daughter Natasha, her boyfriend Kyle, and son Jon and girlfriend Ashley. Fun, fun
