July 1st, Monday

Canada Day !! Left Castlegar and had a big drive to Nelson,(known as the hippy town of Canada) 55 kms away. The road followed the Kootenay River where there are 1/2 dozen Dams harnessing the water power. Some Dams only went part way across the river. We booked into the Nelson City Campground which is on a hill overlooking the lake. After a walking tour of the historic buildings and a pop in to a few stores we had lunch at a pub overlooking the lake.
Hot, sunny day and a beautiful view of the mountains and lake activity. Nelson has a small electric street car which runs along the lake from downtown to the Lakeside Park where the Canada Day celebrations were being held. Hop aboard ! The park was busy - beach, bands, children's booths, shaded park, people watching because there are some characters here (hippies young and old), lots of bikes, sand sculptures, etc. We spend a couple of hours on the beach in the shade (35 degrees) but no swimming as the water is cold !
Dinner at Louie's steak house with the waitress being from St Andrews. In the campground the couple next to us, (Marijn and Marije Dekker) is from Holland and after their 2 young boys went to bed the 4 of us sat around the picnic table and sipped on wine. Had a great chat with them. Then the fireworks over the Lake ended the evening.
